250 Inmates Escape Pakistani Prison
Late
Monday night 250 prisoners escaped from a Pakistani prison after the
100-year-old facility was attacked by Taliban fighters. Over 100 Taliban
militants ambushed the prison grounds on motorbikes and vehicles,
blasting the walls with rocket-propelled grenades and other arms, which
allowed the prisoners to break free. Reports of exactly how many broke
out are mixed, but security officials have said that 243 prisoners,
including 30 militants and 5 females, escaped. Another major attack on a
prison nearby set free about 400 inmates in April last year. “The
attack was so sudden and big,” said one official. “Probably no one
suspected it was around the corner. No security measures could be put in
place to preempt it.”
